Photo Hunters- RARE
Today's Photohunters theme is RARE
Thanks to TNCHICK. Sorry you're under the weather and hope you are on the mend soon.
I have chosen two photos for the theme- one rare, the second rarer.
This first photo is of a black sand beach on the Big Island of Hawaii, Punalu'u Beach.
Black sand is formed when hot molten lava shatters as it makes contact with the cold water of the ocean.
This second photo is even RARER. This is a shot of the Green Sand beach on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Green sand is also made from molten lava. However, it acquires it's green color from the mineral olivine that is present in the mix.

Wow green sand?! That's pretty cool, never heard of that before. Hawaii must really be a world of wonders. Happy hunting :)
These are both beautiful pictures! We saw a green lake on the volcanic island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands off the coast of west Africa. Very interesting!
That's neat. I never knew about the green sand. One day maybe I'll get to visit.
Oh, gorgeous photos!! I have been to that black sand beach in Hawaii but never the green one.
And yes - you can be "family" if you'd like and come on over to Paris!! :-) I am trying to get my dearest friend that lives there in Maryland (Columbia) to come on over. She has never been here.
Have a great weekend!
I've never even HEARD of green sand! Wow. That's really cool. And thanks for the explanation.
Lovely photos! Definitely rare. My humans saw a black sand beach when they visited Maui, and they found it very interesting. Never heard of the green sand beaches before, though. Very cool!
Amazing photos! I've seen a black sand beach before but never green. Very rare indeed. Thank you for sharing. Thanks for visiting earlier. Happy weekend!
Both of these ARE really neat! And I had heard about the black sand - have even seen it - though not in it's natural environment. But I had never HEARD of the green sand! So... you are responsible for having taught me something today! Gooooo you! I do think I would still prefer WHITE sand for a day at the beach! ;)
Cool pictures. Have never seen black or green sand. That is really rare. Have a great weekend.
I have never seen green sand before! Very interesting! Have a terrific weekend, and thanks for stopping by.
Beautiful photos ! I want to go there! Thanks for sharing in my dreams.
I love Hawaii - we were there on our honeymoon and experienced the Black sand beach! Great photo for the theme - I heard there is a pink sand beach there as well.
Wow! Great choices for the "rare" theme this week. Lovely pictures. Must be really something to see in person. I've only seen generic beach sand but also white sand and I have been to a pebble beach once. I'd love to see Hawaii someday.
Now i want to go back to Hawai'i and see those turtles sleeping on the black sand.
Hi Gewels. I love how you wrap fascinating explanations around incredible pictures.
I followed your link home from Roxanne's (SRP/Melange) site, and I look forward to reading more. I hope you'll pop by my site and say hi as well.
All the best,
Carmi

Cool photos! I have never heard of green sand. I guess I need to come to Hawaii and check it out!
Great photos, green sand. I saw black sand on Stromboli, but also rare.
That's so cool! I had heard of black sand, but not green. Thanks for the explanation!

Ahhh! Hawaii, maybe one day I will have the chance and money to visit, but for now thanks for sharing.
Ooooh - how beautiful! I've been to the islands twice but have yet to see a black sand beach, much less a green sand beach! Thank you for stopping by & have a great weekend!
Great photos. We have never seen either one of those sands. Thanks for visiting our blog
My daughter took a trip to the big island with her Geology class last May. She was on the green beach and visited the volcano lava fields. She loved it there.
Great photos. I've seen black sand but in Tenerife.
Wonderful shots. I can't wait to see it in real life!
Neat! And it would be an even rarer thing if I were ever to go there!
I never knew there was green sand, or black for that matter. I've seen the usual beige and white. The white sand I have seen looked like snow. Thanks for sharing your rare photos.
Green sands I have never seen. And I thought I saw them all when I visited India as they had the spectrum from brown to red to yellow-red and black!
Green is rare. Thanks

What beautiful photos. Black and green sand. They must be really awesome in real life. I'd love to visit those beaches, and bring little samples of the sand home with me :o)
Thanks for visiting mine on Saturday. I'm a bit behind, but better late than never, haha. Have a wonderful day.
